If an individual takes a drug often enough, his body will make changes so that it can manage all the extra chemicals that are being put into it. As a result, normal levels of natural chemicals and nurtrients are too low. When it occurs, a person becomes depressed. The addict will then take more of the drug in order to feel better. The drug addict will temporarily feel better. When the drug wears off, the addict feels even worse than before. This is called the withdrawal phase. The addict then craves more drugs to help him feel better, and the cycle starts all over again. The human body has a system of checks and balances that keep us stable and when alcohol and drug addiction sets in, this balance is completely thrown off.
Since the 50's, we have experienced a much greater need for drug rehabilitation in the United States. This increased demand for drug rehabilitation comes from an addicted public that dramatically increased in numbers, and it still growing with the introduction of more pharmaceuticals into the general marketplace, but the more important cause for the rapid rise in the establishment of drug rehabilitation centers evolved due to the money that was invested to pay for drug rehabs. Most of this money came from health insurance companies that had added a provision for drug rehab in an overwhelming majority of their health plans. However, drug rehabilitation centers were established well before there was any workable science to deliver a technology that would handle drugs and alcohol addiction successfully - and drug rehab’s reputation has suffered because of it.
